Travel Insurance Tips and Advice

Undecided about purchasing Travel Insurance?

Like the old saying, “Better safe than sorry.” Don’t be sorry for not getting the insurance you need.

I’m guilty of this myself. I often think that everything will be completely under control, but certain things aren’t under our control.

Luckily I have never needed to use insurance on a trip, but I always make sure I am either insured by my credit card, or by purchasing some cheap travel insurance coverage before a trip.

I have always purchased insurance especially when traveling into Mexico!

It’s a great place to take vacations and all, but it can also be quite dangerous if you are unfamiliar with the area you’ll be traveling into.

You may be asking, “Well it sounds great, but how much is it going to cost me?”

Well I’m no insurance sales agent, and I could never tell you exactly what it would cost you. From my experience, this all depends on a variety of factors. It’s sort of similar how it costs more to insure a teenager than it does a 20 year driving veteran.

You can choose to either get…

1. Travel insurance to cover just the duration of the trip.
2. A more extensive travel insurance to cover the entire trip for which your away from home.

Keep in mind that traveler’s insurance is simply an insurance policy that that protects you from any losses while away from home.

You may already have some type of insurance that covers you, and you may not even need traveler’s insurance.

San Diego is a very safe place, so you don’t have to get extra insurance to cover you as you would to travel into a high risk country. A standard insurance policy would do.

Here are some common types of coverages you can expect to come with your insurance policy…

- Medical expenses
- Personal liability and rental car damage excess
- Accidental death, injury or disablement benefit
- Emergency evacuation/repatriation
- Cancellation/Curtailment/Delayed departure
- Delayed baggage (and emergency replacement of essential items
– Loss, theft or damage to personal possessions and money (including travel documents)
- Loss of income

…etc

Check with your travel agency as to what your policy will cover. Sometimes they may require you to pay more for additional coverage, or may have already included it in your policy.

You may also like to know what your paying for as to not purchase something you don’t need! Always ask. These sales agents can be quite sneaky at times if you know what I mean.
