Horton Plaza San Diego…An Architectural Delite

September 1, 2008 by MrXcel

If you’re looking for that ever eluding but unique shopping experience, then Horton Plaza San Diego is the spot for you. Its unique colors and sexy curves really make this fine piece of architecture an living breathing work of art. It seems as though the walls jump out at you the minute you walk into this dizzying array of shapes and colors.

The very first time I came to Horton Plaza, I got lost (Don’t laugh). If you ignore the maps around the mall this might just happen to you if it’s your first time. If you do find yourself lost, don’t hesitate to ask someone as frustration can mess up your experience. I would really be happy to know that you and your family had the best shopping experience.

Some Cool and Fun Facts:

Horton Plaza San Diego is an outdoor shopping mall made up of 5 stories of high quality shops. It takes up about six and a half blocks directly adjacent to the Gaslamp Quarter.

This is truly one of San Diego’s most valued gems!

The architect responsible for this fine piece of work was Jon Jerde. He really caused a lot of buzz back in 1985 when he unveiled this slick and very risky design. It stretched and challenged peoples way of thinking. He forced people to begin to see the shopping mall in a whole new light. He included new features such as uneven levels, long runways, sudden drop offs, dramatic parapets, and brightly painted facades as part of his sleek and cool design.

You see, merchants wanted (and still do) all the attention to be directed to shopping. The last thing they wanted was some fancy piece of architecture distracting all of their potential clients. Jon really risked everything when he designed the Plaza. This truly was one of his finest works, and he really hit a home run among San Diegans as it is still considered one of the coolest places to shop in San Diego.

No one really expected overnight success when the Plaza opened, but that is exactly what happened. The very first year over 25 million people visited the new attraction/shopping mall. It’s amazing to know that twenty-two years later it is sill San Diego’s highest producing shopping mall.

Not only have the merchants withing Horton Plaza benefited, but the surrounding community has benefited as well. This has particularly helped fuel the continued improvement of the historic Gaslamp Quarter.

When I think of Horton Plaza, I always think of a time I came to see The Nutcracker at the Lyceum Stage around Christmas time. I went with a youth group when I was in high school during my senior year.

I also remember coming here several times when my wife and I were still dating. We would come for shopping, dining, and occasionally a movie. These were good times, right before the craziness of parenting took over. Don’t get me wrong, I love my boy, but I miss when my wife and I could just jump in the car and go off somewhere without worrying about a babysitter, feedings, etc. Anyways, back to talking about Horton Plaza…

Just about everyone I know has told me how much they have enjoyed coming to this mall in San Diego. But not everything is perfect. Most have complained of how big it is, and how hard of a time they had completing all of their shopping. Do keep in mind that if you have time constraints, and are coming simply for shopping, I wouldn’t recommend this mall to you. It can really drain your energies rather quickly.

There are over 184 stores at this mall. The two largest department stores are Nordstrom’s and Macy’s. Trust me, with 184 stores at your finger tips, it would take a whole days worth of time to go through all these stores. What ever you may be looking for you are more than certain to find something here.

Do keep in mind, since it is located in Downtown, parking is never free. If you park in the underground
parking structure you can get you parking ticket validated when you purchase something to avoid paying the parking fees. I usually just buy an ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s if I know I will just be window shopping.

I invite you to visit both Horton Plaza and the Gaslamp Quarter. If you are looking to get a good feel of what San Diego is all about, this is the right place to come. It really doesn’t get any better than shopping in a architectural marvel, under the sun, while enjoying all of the shops.

Gas Lamp District San Diego Shopping

September 1, 2008 by MrXcel

The Gas Lamp District San Diego is where you will find hip and urban shopping, dining, and entertainment venues. If it’s cool shopping boutiques you’re looking for…then you’ll need to plan for an entire day of shopping to cover all of the Gaslamp District shopping venues. You can actually cover it all in one day if planned right.

Although the Gaslamp Quarter is a great place to bring the entire family for some site seeing…you may want to leave the kids with the nanny if you’re planning on doing some shopping. You’ll find 16 1/2 blocks of densely packed shopping boutiques…about 100 unique shops, each selling a different kind of product.

The cool thing about the Gaslamp Quarter is the diversity of shops. You’ll find everything from bath products and trendy apparel at Bubbles Boutique…to high quality wine at the Wine Bank.

Make sure to stop by the Lucky Dog Pet Boutique if you have a furry animal at home you just need to buy a gift for. Also, visit Gaslamp Gifts, located inside the historic William Heath Davis House. Here you’ll get to see how far the Gas Lamp District San Diego has come…and you’ll be able to buy some really unique gifts that remind you of the Gaslamp District.

If you’re looking for additional information on what kinds of shops you’ll expect to find at the Gaslamp Quarter District San Diego…I recommend you visit the official website of the Gaslamp Quarter Association.

Personally, I’m no shopping buff. I just pick up on a thing or two from recommendations people give me around town. If you know of a great place or had a great experience at a particular shop in the Gaslamp District San Diego shopping area…I would love to hear about it, as would the reader’s who regularly visit these pages.

San Diego Shopping Is Far From Ordinary

September 1, 2008 by MrXcel

It is truly a shopper’s paradise. San Diego Shopping offers a variety of shopping malls, outlets, discount stores, and shopping districts.

Whether it’s a souvenir you’re looking for, or you simply want to go on a shopping frenzy, you’re sure to find it on your next trip.

There are a variety of places for shopping in San Diego. There are Districts filled with shops. San Diego also offers a variety of Shopping Malls for every taste. Then there are the Discount Stores, Outlet Centers, and Flea Markets.

The list is so long I could not possibly do them all justice, so I have listed a few of my favorite spots for San Diego Shopping below.

Shopping Districts:

1. Gas Lamp District San Diego – Located in the Downtown area, the Gaslamp Quarter is loaded with unique shops. The cool thing about these shops is that they are open late. The streets are usually filled with Club goers or young couples.

2. Seaport Village – This is a really cool spot for shopping. It is located directly next to the bay. It consists mostly of Souvenir Shops, and Restaurants. On a sunny day you may even catch a street performance. You may also like to ride the carousel with your little ones.

3. Old Town – This location is full of San Diego History, along with great shops for the typical souvenir shopper. Make sure to visit Plaza del Pasado, which is full of theme-based shops. My personal favorite thing about Old Town is watching a Mariachi performance, while dining at one of its Mexican Restaurants.

4. La Jolla – Personally I never shop here, but I have always dreamed about it. You see, this shopping district has nothing but upscale shops that rival Rodeo Drive. I have gone window-shopping in the past, and my personal favorite shop is the Ferrari Dealership. Hey, it doesn’t hurt to dream.

Shopping Malls:

1. Horton Plaza – Among the most popular shopping malls is Horton Plaza located in the Gaslamp District. I particularly like this mall because of its unique architecture and colorful display.

2. Fashion Valley – If high quality and upscale stuff is your thing, then this is the place for you.

3. Otay Ranch Town Center – This San Diego shopping mall was just recently opened in 2006. My family and I really enjoy this spot because it is close to home, and all shopping is done in the open air.

Outlet Shopping:

1. The Shops At Las Americas – Close to the Mexican border, this outlet mall exceeds anyones expectations of what an outlet mall. It has well over 75 stores. What ever you are looking for you are more than likely to find it here at bargain prices.

2. Viejas Outlet Mall – If you are looking to take a family retreat this is the place. Plan for a whole day of shopping. Don’t miss out on Viejas Casino Buffet, and if your feeling lucky visit the Casino. Viejas is also known for putting on some fine performances.

3. Nordstrom Rack – Like shopping name brand, but don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for it. Then this is the spot for you.

4. Burlington Coat Factory – This is my wife’s personal favorite. It is just like your typical department store in the mall, but you just can’t find prices like these anywhere else.

Flea Markets:

1. Kobey’s Swap Meet – Located on the west side of the Sports Arena, it is by far the biggest and most popular flea market in San Diego.

2. Spring Valley Swap Meet – Although there are many more flea markets in San Diego, this is my personal favorite. Twice a year I bring the old junk I have accumulated in the garage and sell it here.

San Diego BBQ…Phil’s BBQ Is All You Need

September 1, 2008 by MrXcel

The Very Best San Diego BBQ at Phil’s BBQ Restaurant

Ladies and Gentlemen, get those bibs ready!

Get that roll of paper towels ready…because you’ll need it. If you’re looking for the best San Diego BBQ joint…Phil’s BBQ is the spot.

A fellow co-worker brought me to Phil’s BBQ a while back, and I’ve been going back ever since. I liked it so much because its one of those places you can pig out without worrying about what others think of you.

You just can’t avoid stuffing your face in this San Diego BBQ hot spot.

So how is the atmosphere at Phil’s BBQ?

Phil’s is known to get crowded…but this all depends on the time of day you come. If you plan on coming at peak hours…such as lunch, dinner, or on a weekend…do plan on waiting in line. Lines are known to form all the way outside. The smell lingering from the kitchen will surely keep you planted. That Chinese Buffet restaurant across the way doesn’t stand a chance.

Phil’s does make you wait in line before sitting down…but no need to worry about fussy angry men here as this place is all about the family.

When you finally do make it up to the counter…do order plenty of food. This is not the place to be conservative. Midway through your meal you’ll find yourself licking your fingers every other second. Just keep in mind that if you want to place another order, you’ll have to wait in line again.

You’ll find a handwashing station area for those BBQ covered hands…and plenty of paper towels on your table. Due to Phil’s popularity…I’m sure they have had to get creative as to maximizing their space, so you’ll find that most tables are smaller than you’re accustomed to.

They’ll give you a pager after your order to let you know when it is ready. If you have no luck finding a table at first, you’ll find that they have a few televisions to watch…and even some board games by the fire place.

Phil’s secret BBQ sauce is mouth watering. Their other specialty, obviously, is their ribs. You have your choice of either pork or beef ribs smothered with Phil’s BBQ sauce.

I would highly recommend the two, but beef has always been my favorite. You also have the option of BBQ Chicken. You’ll have the option of 2 small sides or a large side to go along with your meal.

All this for about $9 and you got yourself a closer of a deal.

So why would you consider having to wait so long for BBQ? Why would anyone in San Diego put up their time for that matter? You’ll just have to experience it for yourself…but all I can say is that you’ll be wishing you had more room in your stomach. This San Diego BBQ restaurant is just that good!

Rubio’s Restaurant – Best Fish Tacos In Town!

September 1, 2008 by MrXcel

Ever wonder where Fish Tacos comes from?

Well, in part a man by the name Ralph Rubio is responsible for popularizing this dish.

Rubio’s Restaurant was first founded in San Diego by Mr. Rubio. He got insipired while vacationing in Baja California during a Spring Break trip. This is where he tasted the taco, and got the idea of bringing the dish to San Diego.

The fish taco made this restaurant almost an instant success over night. It is also what has carried it through to great success.

This is a franchise chain of restaurants, and you may see a sign that says “Rubio’s Fresh Mexican Grill” (previously known as Rubio’s Baja Grill).

This is a great spot for the family since the atmosphere is very casual and fast. You eat with your hands (they do have spoons and forks), so don’t worry about impressing anyone.

If you’re from Arizona, Colorado, Nevada or Utah, you may have already eaten at a Rubio’s since it has expanded into these neighboring states.

It’s really cool to know that a fellow San Diegan was responsible for pushing one of my favorite dishes to fame. These tacos are absolutely tasty, and you’ll find yourself licking your fingers twice!

Now, I love eating at Taco Shops all over San Diego. This is a favorite past time of mine.

I must mention though that till this day I still haven’t found a single restaurant that matches this dish.

A lot of people here call it a “Watered Down Mexican Restaurant”. It may be “Watered Down”, but the fish tacos are great!

Way to go Ralph!

I always got word of how great this dish was, but never really thought much of it.

How often have you got a great recommendation from a close friend, but not until you try it do you believe it?

One day when my wife and I were at the Chula Vista Shopping Center going about our business, we got hungry, and there was a Rubio’s nearby. We decided to order a few fish tacos since it was “Fish Taco Tuesday”, and they were just a dollar each.

Ever since I took that first bite that day, I have been hooked going back for more.

If you’re unfamiliar with the fish taco, it is primarily made from Alaskan Pollock, which is battered, fried, and served in a corn tortilla. You can attempt to make them yourself, but that secret recipe is really hard to duplicate. I’ve tried it many times.

You may be asking the all important question, “So how expensive is it?”…

If you’re worried about price, don’t be. It is very affordable. If you can afford a Big Mac at McDonald’s, you can afford a few fish tacos.

Actually, you can buy a whole crate load of these for the family on “Fish Taco Tuesday”. Do check before you order though because I am not sure if this offer is still around.

I like going to the Rubios close to home in the Chula Vista Shopping Center, or across from the Otay Ranch Town Center.

Since it is a franchise chain, they are spread out all over San Diego. I’m sure that if you are out and about your bound to run into one.

Just remember, if your trying to decide between Mc-Kee-Dees and Rubio’s, go with Rubio’s.

Grease Has Nothing OnCorvette Diner!

September 1, 2008 by MrXcel

What!…Corvette Diner better than Grease the movie. A bit of an overstatement? Well, maybe a little, but that isn’t the point. What I’m trying to get across is that eating here is very much like Grease the movie, except you get the live experience.

If you’re looking for a really cool place to take the family…then Corvette Diner is the spot for you. If a noisy, energetic, and outgoing environment just makes you cringe, then this is probably not the place for you. If you know this is exactly what you need from a dining experience, then Corvette Diner is loaded with fun for the entire family.

The very first time I came here I was in high school…I really thought it was so cool. I had never seen a restaurant with so much energy. Corvette Diner San Diego is themed around the rockin’ 1950s. I thought I was in some re-run episode of “Happy
Days”.

When the waitress came over, and bounced a straw off my head, I really thought it was bazaar. I soon realized that this was not the place to be formal. Now that I remember, this was so much fun it makes me want to go back (must have some sense of humor to come here). The waitress came over and sat next to my friend as she took our order, with her spunky bright clothes and sculpted hairdo.

There is a DJ playing the best 50s music. Don’t be shy, if there is a request you would like to make, go right ahead and ask for you favorite song to be played. This is a particularly favorable atmosphere for pre-teen birthday parties (anything having to do with teens for that matter).

If you can’t stand loud music, plan on bringing some earplugs as the decibel level is always high. If you ask me, I find this to be quite enjoyable and fun.

The menu is full of great home-style cooked meals. They offer a variety of hamburgers cooked directly off their grill. You can also get sandwiches, appetizers, and salads if you’re feeling like going light. There’s also a great selection of deserts you can choose from. They have a mini bar where you can take jello shots, or order your favorite drink.

I’ve heard mixed reviews from people saying their food and service is great, but others who have been coming here longer say
that it has dried up a bit. I think this is typical of what happens with anything. Over time you grow to expect more out of
the restaurants you have grown through the years.

If bubbly singing and dancing napkin and straw tossing waiters and waitresses excites you, then you won’t find another place in San Diego like Corvette Diner. This is an ideal place for a family full of kids that just can’t seem to stay still in their seats. Trust me, when you can eat without worrying about what your neighbor thinks of you because your kid continues to scream…it is quite a relieving feeling.

All in all this place really Rocks, and keeps San Diego on the map!

My heart goes out to everyone over at Corvette Diner that work so hard to keep the atmosphere so fun and inviting. It’s one thing to serve great food, but it’s another to do this around a themed atmosphere with energy at the highest degree.

Corvette Diner is located in the Hillcrest area of San Diego. This is near Balboa Park. Here’s the address to the place.

Best Family San Diego Restaurants

September 1, 2008 by MrXcel

San Diego restaurants offer a variety of cuisines for just about any family budget.

San Diego’s rich culture gives it a nice selection of dining experiences to choose from.

If your looking for that perfect family San Diego dining spot, then refer to this short and condensed family restaurant guide I have put together.

1. Laid Back Atmosphere

I particularly like going to Rubios for their famous fish tacos. If your looking for something cheap, but filling for the whole family, then I recommend Rubios.

From time my family and I go to Old Town for some really good quality Mexican food. The Old Town area is full of great atmosphere, music, shops, and people, to say the least.

2. Fun All Around

Corvette Diner is located in the Hillcrest area. This is a 1950’s themed diner full of high octane energy.

If you don’t mind a bit of screaming while you eat, and drinking straws tossed at you, then you will have a blast at this diner.

3. Slice It Up!

The first restaurant I ever visited in “Little Italy” was Felippi’s Pizza Grotto when some co-workers invited me out for lunch. You haven’t tasted real pizza if you haven’t made it out to Felippi’s.

Besides, I’m sure your kids will really enjoy the food.

If pizza isn’t really your thing, don’t worry. Little Italy has some of the best San Diego restaurants. Well, at least I think so.

4. Best BBQ in Town!

If your a BBQ lover…you’ll really love Phil’s BBQ. Many San Diegans rave that this is the best BBQ joint in town. See for yourself why this is the best San Diego BBQ in town…

Tips On Relocating To San Diego

September 1, 2008 by MrXcel

Looking for tips on relocating to San Diego? We all know that moving to a new place you are unfamiliar with can be extremely stressful.

Below you will find all you need to get started on your planning. I have included some valuable information that will make this a smooth transition for you. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am in no way a relocating or real estate expert…I’m just a friendly person who has gone through this process before who would like to give you a helping hand.

Here are some good tips on what I regard to be the most important stuff when making your moving plans to San Diego.

Plan a Home Finding Trip:

First, locate an affordable hotel and make reservations for the days you will be house hunting. It is ideal that you determine your lifestyle requirements so you can book a hotel near the community that best meets that requirement.

Research Before You Arrive:

You may also like to gather information on communities and schools in the San Diego area you may be interested just to have a list to target once your here. Out of that list you may like to filter down to just a few options based on the lifestyle choices you determined in the first step.

Other important features to research on would include home prices, demographics, new MLS listings, location maps, photos, etc.

Speak with a Mortgage Consultant:

Get all your questions answered about how much house you can afford. It may also be a good idea to get pre-qualification and pre-approval assistance just to determine if your relocation goals are realistic.

Find a Realtor You Can Trust:

Find a Realtor you can work with and that you can trust with you home finding needs. Request that they give you a guided tour of all the areas that most interest you and your family…based on all the items you identified to be most important to you.

Identify Your New Home:

Finally, after such a long process, you’ve identified your new home. Congratulations…you are just steps away from moving to one of the finest cities in the U.S.

Follow-up with your Realtor on what to do next regarding submitting a bid for the home and closing the deal!

Next thing on your moving list is to enjoy the San Diego sun. Happy moving!
