If you’re looking for that ever eluding but unique shopping experience, then Horton Plaza San Diego is the spot for you. Its unique colors and sexy curves really make this fine piece of architecture an living breathing work of art. It seems as though the walls jump out at you the minute you walk into this dizzying array of shapes and colors.
The very first time I came to Horton Plaza, I got lost (Don’t laugh). If you ignore the maps around the mall this might just happen to you if it’s your first time. If you do find yourself lost, don’t hesitate to ask someone as frustration can mess up your experience. I would really be happy to know that you and your family had the best shopping experience.
Some Cool and Fun Facts:
Horton Plaza San Diego is an outdoor shopping mall made up of 5 stories of high quality shops. It takes up about six and a half blocks directly adjacent to the Gaslamp Quarter.
This is truly one of San Diego’s most valued gems!
The architect responsible for this fine piece of work was Jon Jerde. He really caused a lot of buzz back in 1985 when he unveiled this slick and very risky design. It stretched and challenged peoples way of thinking. He forced people to begin to see the shopping mall in a whole new light. He included new features such as uneven levels, long runways, sudden drop offs, dramatic parapets, and brightly painted facades as part of his sleek and cool design.
You see, merchants wanted (and still do) all the attention to be directed to shopping. The last thing they wanted was some fancy piece of architecture distracting all of their potential clients. Jon really risked everything when he designed the Plaza. This truly was one of his finest works, and he really hit a home run among San Diegans as it is still considered one of the coolest places to shop in San Diego.
No one really expected overnight success when the Plaza opened, but that is exactly what happened. The very first year over 25 million people visited the new attraction/shopping mall. It’s amazing to know that twenty-two years later it is sill San Diego’s highest producing shopping mall.
Not only have the merchants withing Horton Plaza benefited, but the surrounding community has benefited as well. This has particularly helped fuel the continued improvement of the historic Gaslamp Quarter.
When I think of Horton Plaza, I always think of a time I came to see The Nutcracker at the Lyceum Stage around Christmas time. I went with a youth group when I was in high school during my senior year.
I also remember coming here several times when my wife and I were still dating. We would come for shopping, dining, and occasionally a movie. These were good times, right before the craziness of parenting took over. Don’t get me wrong, I love my boy, but I miss when my wife and I could just jump in the car and go off somewhere without worrying about a babysitter, feedings, etc. Anyways, back to talking about Horton Plaza…
Just about everyone I know has told me how much they have enjoyed coming to this mall in San Diego. But not everything is perfect. Most have complained of how big it is, and how hard of a time they had completing all of their shopping. Do keep in mind that if you have time constraints, and are coming simply for shopping, I wouldn’t recommend this mall to you. It can really drain your energies rather quickly.
There are over 184 stores at this mall. The two largest department stores are Nordstrom’s and Macy’s. Trust me, with 184 stores at your finger tips, it would take a whole days worth of time to go through all these stores. What ever you may be looking for you are more than certain to find something here.
Do keep in mind, since it is located in Downtown, parking is never free. If you park in the underground
parking structure you can get you parking ticket validated when you purchase something to avoid paying the parking fees. I usually just buy an ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s if I know I will just be window shopping.
I invite you to visit both Horton Plaza and the Gaslamp Quarter. If you are looking to get a good feel of what San Diego is all about, this is the right place to come. It really doesn’t get any better than shopping in a architectural marvel, under the sun, while enjoying all of the shops.
